McIntire’s Bachelor of Science in Commerce program is a three-year undergraduate program where students blend the liberal arts with a dynamic business education. Because of the curriculum requirements in both business coursework and the liberal arts Disciplines, all students who enter the McIntire program must spend three years of study at McIntire to finish the degree. Because of this timeline, students are welcome to apply to transfer into McIntire during their first year at the VCCS - or welcome to apply in their second year while finishing their Associate degree. The Bachelor’s in Commerce only requires four specific prerequisites: ENG 111, ENG 112, ECON 202, and BUS 100. What else should I take? While working on your Associate degree’s requirements, in addition to the required McIntire prerequisite courses, students are encouraged to work towards UVA’s Disciplines General Education requirements. These are graduation requirements for all McIntire students that can be fulfilled by transferable liberal arts coursework in the VCCS. Transferable disciplines are noted on this guide and can also be found on UVA’s transfer credit analyzer. More details on the McIntire curriculum can be found here. McIntire’s three-year curriculum aligns with UVA’s College of Arts and Sciences’ general education requirements. Students can anticipate taking business coursework as well as liberal arts general education courses across all three years of study. As part of the McIntire program, all students major in Commerce but select a concentration (or two) from the following: Accounting, Finance, Information Technology, Management, Marketing. Additionally, students can add an optional “track” (or two) to their degree. Available tracks are: Business Analytics, Entrepreneurship, Global Commerce, Quantitative Finance, Real Estate, Strategic Brand Consulting & Communications. All students join the McIntire program as second-year students and can anticipate taking 15 total credits of required Commerce coursework across their fall and spring semesters, 9 credits of general education Discipline requirements, and 6 credits of elective coursework. Fulfilling these Disciplines General Education requirements in advance via VCCS coursework is very possible, but does not elicit the opportunity for students to complete the McIntire program in fewer than six semesters. Rather, students would have more opportunity to explore electives across the University, or pursue additional tracks, concentrations, or courses across the Mcintire School. As third and fourth year students at McIntire, students will utilize usually 6 remaining credits towards the Disciplines, while focusing the majority of their coursework on McIntire classes towards their desired concentrations or tracks |
