In a society where many cry “fake news,” what is journalism and what is its role in informing and engaging readers? What are some of the different kinds of journalistic writing, and what are their writing expectations? Answering these questions, among others, this class will provide a basic introduction to journalistic news writing principles and standards. Page layout and design will also be discussed, as will online journalism. Students will receive practice in writing a variety of journalistic styles and will be asked to submit at least one article for publication in the campus student newspaper, The Captain’s Log.
