What Should I Consider When Selecting Courses?

 

  • Complete foundational courses like English and any math prerequisites in your first year.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered.

  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and discuss needed coursework for moving toward a four-year major.

Is This Degree Right For Me?

 

  • The major is designed for students seeking teaching endorsements at the PK–6 levels. Students will choose between the Elementary PK-6 track and/or the Special Education K-12 track.

  • UVA Wise’s Teacher Education Program is CAEP (Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation) accredited.

 

What Is The Impact On My Degree Of Work I Have Already Completed?

 

  • Associate Transfer Degree Completion: The completion of a transfer associate degree results in all lower-division general education requirements being met.

  • Dual Enrollment – Completion of Associate Degree in HS: The completion of an associate degree concurrent with high school results in 62 credits of coursework applied towards your degree. All general education coursework is satisfied.

  • Credit for Prior Learning: UVA Wise accepts AP, IB, Cambridge, CLEP, DANTES, and military credits – details can be found here – https://www.uvawise.edu/registrar/transferring-courses.

  • Catalog Year: UVA Wise freshmen and transfers typically use the catalog year of entry to the college but may choose to use either of the previous two years when enrolled at the community college.

  • LOCATION – UVA Wise is housed on a beautiful, modern campus, spanning 396 acres in the rolling mountains of Southwest Virginia. With attractive facilities and over 50 campus organizations, UVA Wise offers lots to do and see. We have many types of on campus housing options and several eateries, including the Dining Commons, Chick-fil-A and Build pizza and subs. Located a short distance from Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia, there is a wealth of hiking, outdoor recreation, camping, shopping, entertainment and more in the region.

What Are My Chances For Getting Accepted?

 

  • If you have completed an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science with a 2.5 GPA or higher you are eligible for Guaranteed Admission to UVA Wise.

  • If you are working toward your degree but want to get started at Wise your chances of admission are very good if you have maintained good academic standing at your community college.

  • Students who graduate in the licensure track have the opportunity to continue on in the master’s program at UVA Wise.

 

Other Than Classes, Are There Other Program Requirements?

 

  • All students must complete an admission process to the Teacher Education Program (TEP) that will require additional criteria such as a background check, fingerprinting, additional testing, online training, TB skin test and emergency training.
