Transfer Guidance

Guaranteed Admission Agreement Requirements

• Earn a transferable associate degree (Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, or Associate of Arts and Science at the VCCS)

• Students may submit a Letter of Intent to Transfer after completion of 15 transferrable credits, 2.5 or higher GPA, and 90 days prior to graduation from a VCCS institution

• Graduate with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

• Earn a grade of "C" or higher in each community college course applicable to the transfer-oriented associate degree program

• Enroll at ODU within one year of completing the transfer-oriented associate degree

What Should I Consider When Selecting Courses?

• Connect with a pre-transfer advisor if you are considering transferring to ODU. Contact them at transfercenters@odu.edu during your first year at the VCCS.

• Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, and complete your first math and English courses in your first year. For help, see Transfer Steps and Resource Center www.TransferVirginia.org

Is This Degree Right For Me?

• The department has an active research program with ongoing grant support from NASA, NFS, EVMS, JLab and the Commonwealth of Virginia. In the last decade, the department has consistently ranked in the top 20% nationally among all mathematics departments in the US in terms of federal R&D expenditures.

• For students following the Mathematics degree plan, they will complete some core Math coursework and then have a specific major within the degree. The majors that are offered are the following: Applied Mathematics, Actuarial Mathematics, Big Data Analytics, Secondary Mathematics Education, and Statistics/Biostatistics

What Is The Impact On My Degree Of Work I Have Already Completed?

• Associate Transfer Degree Completion: Lower Division General Education Requirements will be waived for transferable associate degrees. Students completing an AS in General Studies degree recognized by SCHEV are eligible for the waiver as long as they are completing a transfer degree approved by SCHEV at the VCCS.

• Dual Enrollment – Completion of Associate Degree in HS: The GAA at ODU applies to students who have earned an associate degree during high school. Students should apply as a freshman applicant and would be eligible for the benefits of the agreement, such as the lower division general education waiver, if admitted.

• Credit for Prior Learning: ODU accepts credits from prior learning to include AP, IB, CLEP, and Cambridge Advanced A/S.

• Catalog Year: Undergraduate students may choose to graduate under the catalog in effect of their first enrollment at ODU or any subsequent catalog provided that the students graduate within six years from the date of first enrollment.

Program Successes & Highlights

• The inclusion of a minor in Risk Management and Insurance introduces the student to specific uses of Actuarial Mathematics.

• The combination of Applied Mathematics and Statistics expands the student's knowledge of solution methods for Risk Analysis.

• The inclusion of computational analytical methods introduces the student to computer modeling.

Do More With Your Degree!

• Any student who wishes to receive a practicum or internship experience may do so as an integral part of the degree program. Student's may substitute the practicum experience for one of the optional courses listed in the major.

Other Than Classes, Are There Other Program Requirements?

• A grade of C+ or higher is required in MATH 211 (MTH 263 at the VCCS) and MATH 212 (MTH 264 at the VCCS). A cumulative GPA of 2.3 or higher is required in all 300 and 400 level core courses with no grade lower than a C. In addition, a grade of C or higher is required in mathematics and statistics prerequisite courses to advance to the next course.

• Elective credit may be needed to meet the minimum requirement of 120 credit hours for all students earning BS in Mathematics.

• Students who plan to major in Secondary Math Education will need to complete 26 credit hours in Professional Education Core coursework
