Transfer Guidance

Guaranteed Admission Agreement Requirements

  • Earn a transferable associate degree (Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Arts and Science at approved institutions only)

  • Students may submit a Letter of Intent to Transfer after completion of 15 transferrable credits, 2.5 or higher GPA, and 90 days prior to graduation from a VCCS institution

  • Graduate with a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA

  • Earn a grade of "C" or higher in each community college course applicable to the transfer-oriented associate degree program

  • Enroll at ODU within one year of completing the transfer-oriented associate degree

Important Links & Dates

What Should I Consider When Selecting Courses?

  • Connect with a pre-transfer advisor if you are considering transferring to ODU. Contact them at transfercenters@odu.edu during your final year at the VCCS.

  • Create a schedule for all required courses, pay attention to prerequisites and when courses are offered, complete your first math and English courses in your first year. For help, see Transfer Steps and Resource Center at www.TransferVirginia.org

  • Connect with an advisor at your community college and Old Dominion University within your first year. College Connect available in your account at www.TransferVirginia.org

Is This Degree Right For Me?

  • The Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering (BSCOME) is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

  • Choose between two majors: Computer Engineering or Modeling & Simulation Engineering (see BS in Computer Engineering -- Modeling & Simulation Engineering Major transfer guide for specifics on that major).

  • Computer Engineering Major technical core consists of course work from electrical engineering to address hardware aspects of computer engineering, and course work from computer science to address software aspects. The curriculum builds on the hardware description language tools and principles of embedded systems introduced in the sophomore year to master the design, test, and synthesis of advanced digital circuits.

  • Focus your elective freedom with a concentration in Computer Hardware Systems, Computer Networks, Cyber Security, or Data Analytics Engineering.

  • The Computer Engineering Major has a built-in minor in Computer Science.

  • Options to gain course credit for internship experiences and/or undergraduate research experiences.

  • Consider a double degree with Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Cybersecurity/Cyber Operations (150+ credit hours).

  • The BSCOME degree is available online through ODU Distance Learning: https://online.odu.edu/programs/computer-engineering-bachelor-degree

  • Learn more about the BSCOME degree and ECE Undergraduate Programs: https://www.odu.edu/ece/academics/undergraduate

What Is The Impact On My Degree Of Work I Have Already Completed?

  • Associate Transfer Degree Completion: Lower Division General Education Requirements will be waived for transferable associate degrees. Students completing an AS in General Studies degree recognized by SCHEV are eligible for the waiver as long as they are completing a transfer degree approved by SCHEV at a VCCS.

  • Dual Enrollment – Completion of Associate Degree in HS: The GAA at ODU applies to students who have earned an associate degree during high school. Students should apply as a freshman applicant and will receive the benefits associated with the transferable associated degree if admitted.

  • Credit for Prior Learning: ODU accepts credits from prior learning to include AP, IB, CLEP, and Cambridge Advanced A/S.

  • Catalog Year: Undergraduate students may choose to graduate under the catalog in effect of their first enrollment at ODU or any subsequent catalog provided that the students graduate within six years from the date of first enrollment.

Is This College Right For Me?

  • Old Dominion University's waterfront campus is in the coastal city of Norfolk, VA, home to the world's largest U.S. Navy base. From internship opportunities with some of the world's top companies, to great shopping and dining, to beautiful beaches and historic sites, there's always something to discover.

  • ODU's 337-acre campus with 3 higher education centers off campus, is the region's only public urban research university. It has both on-campus and off-campus housing options for almost 24,000 students, and a 16:1 faculty ratio.

  • ODU is highly ranked among one of the best public higher education institutions in Virginia for Military Vets.

  • Transfer students make up 40% of the undergraduate population.

  • Learn more about our college at www.TransferVirginia.org

Did You Know That…

  • Completing your Associate transfer degree post-high school satisfies all lower division general education requirements and increases the chance of completing your bachelor's degree?

  • Exceeding 3 years or 90 credits at your community college means you may have exhausted your financial aid at that college and have limited your future financial aid at ODU?

What Can I Do With This Degree?

  • Electrical engineers and computer engineers work in a wide spectrum of activities covering many fields. These include control, communication, computers, semiconductor and solid-state devices, physical electronics, lasers, and optics. There are many different job functions associated with these technical areas. Electrical engineers and computer engineers are employed in systems analysis and design, engineering design and development, applications design and technical sales, production and manufacturing, field service and user training.

  • Graduates from this major have gone to work at BAE Systems, Booz Allen Hamilton, General Electrical, Huntington Ingalls, Lockheed Martin, NASA, Naval Warfare Systems Command, Newport News Shipbuilding, Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Siemens, and WR Systems.

  • Explore possible careers, salaries, and job outlook at www.TransferVirginia.org

Program Successes & Highlights

  • The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department has research laboratories focusing on Applied Plasma Technology; Cybersecurity, Communications and Networking Innovation; Microelectronics and Thin Film Devices; Medical Imaging, Diagnosis, and Analysis; Power Research; Systems Analysis of Metabolic Physiology; Systems Research; Virginia Institute for Photovoltaics and Vision Lab

  • ECE faculty support University centers such as the Applied Research Center, the Frank Reidy Center of Bioelectrics, and the Virginia Modeling, Analysis, and Simulation Center

  • Additional research facilities in the Hampton Roads area with ECE faculty collaboration include the National Institute of Aerospace, NASA Langley Research Center and Jefferson Lab

What Are My Chances For Getting Accepted?

  • As of current data from Fall 2024, ODU's acceptance rate for transfer students is approximately 99%

  • Learn more about applying at www.TransferVirginia.org

Do More With Your Degree!

  • BSCOME students can apply for the ECE or BME Graduate Program through a linked BS/MS, BS/ME, or BS/PhD Program.

Other Than Classes, Are There Other Program Requirements?

  • Students are required to complete 122 credit hours in order to graduate with a BSCOME degree

  • All ODU engineers complete a senior design project, incorporated into required courses during the senior year. Learn more about past and current ECE senior design projects: https://www.odu.edu/ece/students/undergraduate/ece-culminating-design-ex...

  • All students in this program are strongly encouraged to participate in internships and/or undergraduate research projects.
